  • This week’s #ashtangamondays post is on a particular favorite of mine: #SunSalutations. Sun Salutations, or #suryanamaskara, are the prototypical sequence of movements & breaths, vinyasa, that we use to connect our postures together in Ashtanga.
-
The Ashtanga vinyasa sequence is a moving meditation, and we want to try and fill each moment with intention. To that end, learn the conditions for each vinyasa/pose, and do your best to meet those conditions. Form and structure support focus.
-
My sublime wife, @vesic_jelena, is demoing some don’ts and do’s. The videos represent some of the most common corrections we make with students.
-
Let me know what you think of these tips, and thanks for watching💙
-
Video 1️⃣
🚫 Don’t just move and breathe.
✅ Let the breath lead the movement. Spread the movement evenly over the duration of the breath.
-
Video 2️⃣
🚫 Don’t lift the hands.
✅ The cue for the third vinyasa, Trini, is “Inhale, head up.” Press into the hands, pull the belly in, and lean into the hands as you lift your chin. Then you’re in the perfect position for the next vinyasa.
-
Video 3️⃣
🚫 Don’t avoid Chaturanga Dandasana.
✅ Make sure to move through each vinyasa evenly— especially the ones you hate 😅
-
Video 4️⃣
🚫 No extra movements.
✅ In this example, Samasthiti, I often see people stop with the hands together in Anjali Mudra. Samasthiti is standing with the arms by the side. BONUS TIP: keep your focus. Try not to keep fixing your shorts/shirt/hair (unless you really, really need to🤪)

  • This week’s #ashtangamondays post is on a fairly accessible twisting pose from the #Intermediate Series, #Bharadvajasana (Pose Dedicated to the Sage Bharadvaja).
-
My queen, @vesic_jelena, is demoing some do’s and don’ts. As you can see, I’m a little distracted by her glow 😍

Let me know how these tips work for you!
-
Video 1️⃣
🚫 Don’t lift your palm.
✅ Keep the heel of your palm pressing firmly into the mat. Use that pressure to help with the twist.
-
Video 2️⃣
🚫 Don’t squeeze the knees.
✅ Keep your hips in line and the thighs at 90°.
-
Video 3️⃣
🚫 Don’t avoid the twist.
✅ Try bring the shoulder of your extended arm directly over the wrist.
-
Video 4️⃣
🚫 Don’t arch the lower back.
✅ Bring your hips into more of a posterior tilt to drop the sit bones closer to the floor and lift the twist into the thoracic spine.
-
The vinyasa count:
•7/Sapta: Inhale, from Downward Facing Dog, jump through and extend your legs.
•Exhale there (no count/no movement).
•8/Ashtau: Inhale, take the position on the right side. Breathe 5x. Parsva (side) drsti.
•9/Nava: Inhale, extend the right leg, hands down and lift up.
•10/Dasa: Exhale, jump back to Chaturanga Dandasana.
•11/Ekadasa: Inhale, Upward Facing Dog.
•12/Dvadasa: Exhale, Downward Facing Dog
•13/Trayodasa: Inhale, from Downward Facing Dog, jump through and extend your legs.
•Exhale there (no count/no movement).
•14/Caturdasa: Inhale, take the position on the left side. Breathe 5x. Parsva (side) drsti.
•15/Pancadasa: Inhale, extend the left leg, hands down and lift up.

  • This week’s #ashtangamondays post is on the last 3 (actually 4!) poses in our practice: #Baddhapadmasana, #Yogamudra, #Padmasana & #Utpluthih (Bound Lotus, Yoga Gesture, Lotus Pose & Sprung Up).
-
As usual, I’ve roped my muse @vesic_jelena into demoing some do’s and don’ts. Let me know what you think about these tips.
-
Video 1️⃣
🚫 No loose lotus.
✅ In Baddhapadmasana, you can make it easier to catch your feet by setting up with a compact lotus. Squeeze your thighs in towards each other so that your feet stick more out to the sides.
-
Video 2️⃣
🚫 No pets.
✅ A fur-baby in the room is fine, but if they’re sitting on your lap you’ll never get your chin to the floor in Yogamudra.
-
Video 3️⃣
🚫 Don’t arch your back.
✅ Find a straight, strong line in Padmasana. Pull your sit bones down into the floor, contain the front ribs, and draw your head back so the ears are in-line with the shoulders.
-
Video 4️⃣
🚫 Don’t cheat.
✅ Utpluthih is hard, but that doesn’t mean you can take the easy way out. Feet should be in front of the arms, not behind.
-
The vinyasa count:
BADDHAPADMASANA
•7/Sapta: Inhale, from Downward Facing Dog, jump through and extend your legs.
•Exhale there (no count/no movement).
•8/Ashtau: Inhale, catch your feet.
YOGAMUDRA
•9/Nava: Exhale, fold forward, chin to the floor. 10x breaths here. Nasagre (nose) drsti.
PADMASANA
•10/Dasa: Inhale, come up to sit with a straight back, straight arms, and hands in Jnanamudra. 10x breaths here. Nasagre (nose) drsti.
UTPLUTHIH
•10/Dasa: Inhale, hands down and lift up. 10x breaths here. Nasagre (nose) drsti. Don’t come down!
•11/Ekadasa: Exhale, jump back to Chaturanga Dandasana.
•12/Dvadasa: Inhale, Upward Facing Dog.
•13/Trayodasa: Exhale, Downward Facing Dog.
•14/Caturdasa: Inhale, jump to standing.
•15/Pancadasa: Exhale, fold the head down.
•Inhale, Samasthitih

#ashtanga #ashtangayoga
  • Here’s my #ashtangamondays post for #Sirsasana, Headstand. It’s a couple of days late, but at least I’m in the right week.😅
-
Once again my beautiful, long-suffering wife @vesic_jelena is demoing some do’s and don’ts. Really, there’s just so much to say about Headstands! As always, hope you find these tips helpful 🙃
-
Video 1️⃣
🚫 Don’t clasp your palms together.
✅ In the Mysore Ashtanga version of Sirsasana, we keep the palms open. The hands cradle the head. BONUS TIP: Press your index fingers into your head to keep the wrists from collapsing.
-
Video 2️⃣
🚫 Don’t collapse the back of your neck.
✅ Keep your neck safe by positioning your head correctly. Put the head down with the spot just in front of your crown touching the floor.
-
Video 3️⃣
🚫 Don’t open your elbows.
✅ Keep your elbows shoulder width to maintain your lift. Push down through the outer edge of your forearms, and press the shoulders away from the floor.
-
Video 4️⃣
🚫 Avoid arching your back.
✅ Try to maintain the body in a vertical line over your shoulders. Pull your front ribs in towards the spine, squeeze your bum and tuck the tailbone.
-
The vinyasa count:
•7/Sapta: Inhale, from Downward Facing Dog, take position.
•Exhale there (no count/no movement).
•8/Ashtau: Inhale, lift your with straight legs. Breathe 15x. Nasagre (nose) Dristi.
•9/Nava: Exhale, lower the legs halfway. Breathe there 10x, then come back up.
•10/Dasa: Exhale lower down. Sit on your heels, head stays down. Stay there until your blood pressure evens out. •11/Ekadasa: Inhale, jump back to Chaturanga Dandasana.
•Exhale there (no count/no movement).
•12/Dvadasa: Inhale, Upward Facing Dog.
•13/Trayodasa: Exhale, Downward Facing Dog.
